Anybody who knows anything about Stephen Frank’s dog will tell you that Embercombe Charko couldn’t have been his sire. I had both Charko and Lucky sitting on my knee one evening in the croft at Dornoch and either of them would have made two of Max but Charko was his sire. I worked hard at Max and everything seemed to be coming together nicely but I just couldn’t find him a grouse. I didn’t want to miss the novice stakes that were coming up so I entered him, more in hope than in anger. In the Ulster Gundog novice Max pointed his first grouse and won the trial. The next Saturday he pointed his second grouse and won the Donegal F.T.Assoc.’s novice. His litter brother Jonsmae Valentino became a F.T.Ch. but Max couldn’t take pressure from another dog and he never successfully made the jump from novice to open stakes. He did however make a great shooting dog for his new owner.
