The Breffnei & Oriel Club held its Summer Open Stake , today 20th July 2005 under Irish Kennel Club rules & regulations. The meet was at Moynagh’s Pub ( how civilised ) and the Secretary, Paddy Peoples held the draw and introduced the judges for the day Davy Byrne and Gerald Devine. We took the field at about ten and left it about six o’clock in the evening. It was a bright sunny day, about 13 – 21 C with a steady Westerly breeze, for the whole day. There was one withdrawal and the field amounted to 28 dogs. This was Irish Field Trialling at it’s best and in one or two respects maybe it’s worst. With the exception of one pointer all the dogs ran well. They were hard going and enthusiastic about their work. However for all the effort and drive some of them had that usual uneven pattern that misses out ground and ends up leaving birds behind. The other down side was lack of game. With the exeception of a few snipe none of the grouse seen were made use of.

The Irish Clubs are prepared to award ” Best ” prizes to dogs that may not have featured in the awards. Eg. A Best Pointer Award is just that, the Pointer that made the best effort and wasn’t eliminated.
Jump and Judy did extremely well. Judy easily outshone her sire. She had two really hard going runs in heavy ground and finished off with a classy find on a snipe. Unfortunately she had run over a group of small birds and had taken a snap at one of them, so was excluded.
Jump had three runs and ran extremely well. He ended up with two backs but was excluded from the awards because he hadn’t had a find. One of the ways I judge the overall standard of a trial is that I ask myself how many of these dogs would I like to take home on today’s performance. My own two, Paddy People’s two English Setters, Desi Linton’s Red and White Setter, James Coyle’s Pointer, one of Ned Flannelley’s Red and Whites and three of Carol Calvert’s Red Setters. Ten Dogs. That’s the highest ever.Very annoyingly I seem to have mislaid my program.
