The Irish Pointer Club held it’s Open Stake for any variety setter and pointers under Irish Kennel Club Rules & Regulations at Kippure on Saturday 12August 2006. The judges were Tony Kieran and Bill Connelly. Slightly dull and overcast with a gentle northerly breeze the conditions should have been perfect for these dogs.
One thing was missing, grouse. Apart from one find in the first round no more were seen until the run off. The wind also meant that we had to work the ground up hill and back again for most of the day. Very tiring. I saw the trial until the end of the second round at which stage I left. All dogs ran, one ran off and some ran all over the place but they all ran.
I ran against Hugh Brady’s imported Red Setter bitch …………………….in the first round and while it didn’t live up to it’s publicity as the fastest dog ever seen, it did quarter well. It’s second round was nice and flat a very fast. Looked good.
1st Sugar Loaf Wolfe Joe Sullivan’s Pointer Bitch.
2nd
3rd
4th Madhog Run Davy Byrne’s Red Setter Bitch
Jalad :- Started off well but then had two magnificent finds………………………on larks.
Jump :- Ditto the above (including larks)
Judy :- Ditto the above ( but only one lark.) Made it into the second round on the basis of a good bit of quartering in the first and then ran out of her skin in the second but she got a bit wild towards the end and didn’t make the run off.
Crap, crap, crap, crap.
