The Ulster Gundog League held an Open Qualifying Stake for Pointers and A/v Setter at Craig’s Moss, Glarryford, on Saturday 13th October 2007. We were there by the kind permission of the Glarryford Gun Club and the landowners. The main quarry species was pheasant. The judges for the day were Jimmy Dalton and myself. I stood in when the original judge had to withdraw at short notice. It was just about perfect for the job with a cool breeze from the same direction all day and dull but dry conditions. All we needed was some good dog work and that is exactly what we got.
As one of the judges the “J” Regs. preclude me from talking in anything other than general terms about the trial. We are well into the “Pheasant” trial season and dogs have had a few opportunities to perform under the different conditions when a trial is run on a bog. Basically there is a higher degree of control necessary as there isn’t the same scope available ground wise as there would be on the hill. Most dogs are able to work within the tighter constraints but some pushed the envelope. All the dogs made a good fist of running. We were lucky in that birds came to hand at regular intervals, in fact by the end of the trial every dog had run in a brace with an opportunity of game.
